3 Tips for Sailing with Kids: Fun for the Whole Family

Site Administrator • Aug 01, 2019
Children love to hear stories of swashbuckling pirates and tales of the high seas. Feed your child’s love for all things nautical with a family sailing adventure around the beautiful San Francisco Bay. These three tips for sailing with kids will ensure that your aquatic adventure is an experience your family will never forget.

Safety first
One of the most important tips for sailing with kids is to always put safety first. Every member of your party, regardless of age or ability, should wear a life jacket when sailing. Even the most adept swimmers can benefit from the added security of a life jacket—it’s always better to be safe than sorry. Be sure to pack other protective gear as well. There is little shade available when aboard the deck of a ship so it’s important to take protect yourself against the sun’s harmful UV rays. Packing sunglasses and hats on top of slathering on the sunscreen will reduce the risk of sunburn. Remember to reapply your sunscreen throughout the day for maximum protection.

Prepare entertainment
With all the adventure and excitement sailing has to offer, it’s unlikely that your kids will become bored when aboard our ship. However, it can be beneficial to prepare entertainment just in case. Card games or coloring books are good options, as are board games—just be careful that none of the pieces go overboard. You can also create a sightseeing scavenger hunt to keep your kids entertained and engaged in the sailing excursion. The San Francisco Bay is home to over 1,000 animal species, several of which fall under the endangered category. Your kids will love the opportunity to catch a glimpse of San Francisco’s majestic wildlife, and you may even snap some amazing photos along the way. Be sure to look out for the colony of sea lions that have taken up residence near Pier 39.

Make it educational
Many parents know that you can turn almost any activity into a learning opportunity, and a San Francisco sailing tour is no different. While aboard our ship, your kids can learn the basics of sailing—from the proper lingo to the mechanics of a sailboat. Captain John has been a resident of San Francisco for nearly 40 years and has been sailing for much of his life. He has vast knowledge and experience with sailing. Plus, his familiarity with the surrounding San Francisco landscape will ensure that every member of your family ends their excursion with a bit of wisdom. As you sail past the infamous island of Alcatraz and around the shores of Angel Island, take the opportunity to teach your little ones about San Francisco’s history.
